ISLAMABAD – Defence Attache of the Embassy of Republic of Indonesia, Colonel Gamal Haryo Putro, and his spouse Friday hosted a reception to celebrate 67th anniversary of Republic’s Armed Forces Day.

The reception was a greatly attended affair with defence attaches and advisors of the Diplomatic Defence Corps; other diplomats; a number of Pakistani Armed Forces officers and many civilians from different walks of life attended with noticeable presence of their spouses perhaps to pay fare well call to Colonel Putro.

This was his last annual reception of his tenure in Pakistan and he had played significant in deepening defence cooperation between Indonesia and Pakistan.

To acknowledge his contribution in prompting bilateral defence cooperation, Chief of the Admiral Asif Sandila graced the occasion as guest of honour. The proclamation of independence on August 17 1945, the People s Security Army (Tentara Keamanan Rakyat) was formed in June 1947.

TKR was converted into the Indonesian Armed Forces (Hari Tentara Nasional Indonesia) under the leadership of General Soedirman as the first C-in-C.

After this entire Indonesian nationals supported their armed forces and enabled them not only to eliminate the enemy, but provided a strong force to defend territorial integrity.

Today the armed forces are playing an important and significant role as prescribed by the president of Indonesia.

On the dinning tables, elaborate arrangements had been made to entertain the guests with Indonesian cuisine such as mie ayam coto makasar; sate ayam; tahu and tempe with special stations for two different kinds of soup and the chicken sate. Interestingly, these traditional foods are said to have been provided by the Indonesian people to the freedom fighters during the struggle for independence and were a means of logistic provision for the soldiers.

Snack items included a variety of dried fruits and fried salty specialties while the different dessert items attracted guests with a sweet tooth, although Indonesian sweetmeats are not as sugary sweet as can be found in Pakistan!
