PESHAWAR - The teachers and employees of the four public sector universities Friday observed Black Day on the occasion of World Teachers Day to protest delay in giving them 20 per cent pay raise.

The teachers boycotted classes in protest. The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter, had given a call for protest demonstration against the vice chancellors for delay in giving them 20 per cent increase in salaries.

The teaching community also started boycott of classes for indefinite period due to which academic activities remained shut.    

Peshawar University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) also organised a programme in connection with World Teacher Day, in which Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Information Mian Iftikhar was Chief Guest. The teaching staff was tying black strips upon their arms in protest and observed the day as ‘black day’ in protest against the vice chancellors for not giving them 20 percent increased salaries. The teaching communities were of the opinion that their protest will be continued till the acceptance of their demands.  

They added that they were in favor to waste the precious time of the students, but the concerned vice chancellors and authorities concerned were compelled them on protest. They said that the universities’ and Higher Education Commission’s employees in other three provinces and in Islamabad were giving increased salaries but in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa the vice-chancellors were deprived the employees which they termed injustice. All Universities’ Employees Association Class-III, IV and Sanitation Staff were on protest from October 1, against the administration due to which transportation and administrative activities were badly affected.   

Earlier, the protesting employees of the All Universities’ Employees Association led by its President Salahud Din were holding placards and banner inscribed with slogans in favor of their demands and against the delay in release of 20 percent increased salaries.

Carrying the token-coffin of the vice-chancellor University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Imtiaz Gillani and Prof Qibla Ayaz VC Peshawar University on their shoulder the protesting employees chanted full-throated slogans against the administration. In the protest demonstration Sanitation staff were also took part and vowed to continue their protest till the acceptance of their demands.
