LAHORE - Two men were shot dead in two separate incidents of ‘honour’ killing in the provincial capital, police said yesterday.

A 24-year-old man was shot dead by his brother-in-law in Lahore’s Shadbagh area, police said.

Investigators identified the victim as Sabir Yousaf, a resident of Kohistan, who had contracted love marriage with a girl of the same village some five years ago. The couple fled their village and started residing in Lahore in a rented house.

A police investigator said the couple shifted to a rented house in Shadbagh area from Nishtar Colony a couple of days ago.

Sabir was found shot dead at his rented house early yesterday. Police said they also seized a pistol from the crime scene. His wife told the police that her brother Inayat-ul-Rahman killed her husband and fled instantly.

Inayat visited the house of his brother-in-law on Tuesday night by giving assurances to the couple that the family would soon accept their marriage.

A police official said the killer met his sister, Rukayya Bibi, and brother-in-law before going to sleep in an adjacent room. “Later, he opened fire on Sabir and fled instantly while leaving his pistol at the crime scene,” the official said.

The police reached the spot soon after the shooting. The body was moved to the morgue for an autopsy. The police investigators last night notified the victim’s parents in Kohistan village. The body would be handed over to the family after the autopsy.

In the second incident, a man shot and killed the lover of his ex-wife outside a women protection center in Nawan Kot police precincts.

Police identified the victim as Tahir Shafi, a resident of Sharqpur. Naseer shot dead Tahir outside the protection center. Naseer’s wife was staying at the Da-ul-Aman since she filed a case in a local court to get divorce from him.

Police sources said Tahir had developed an affair with the wife of the alleged killer and he wanted to marry her after getting divorce her first husband.

On the day of incident, Tahir was going to Dar-ul-Aman to see Shamim Bibi, the ex-wife of the killer, when Naseer opened fire on him with a pistol. The killer managed to escape from the scene. The police removed the body to the morgue for an autopsy.

The police filed a murder case against Nasser and were investigating with no arrest made yet.
