Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar on Saturday heard the petition pertaining to the Model Town incident at the Supreme Court's Lahore Registry.

A two-member bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Nisar has directed the accountability court to hear the Model Town incident case on the daily basis.

Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) Chief Tahir-ul-Qadri also appeared before the court and requested to constitute impartial Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe Model Town carnage.

During the hearing, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar issued notices to Punjab government, police and prosecution party. He also directed the Attorney General to submit details regarding the case in 15 days.

Earlier, Lahore High Court (LHC) had turned down PAT plea seeking summons of ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif, former chief minister of Punjab (CM) Shehbaz Sharif and ten other ministers in a case pertaining to Model Town carnage.

PAT, in its appeal against the ruling of the trial court, had requested LHC to call former ministers Khawaja Saad Rafique, Rana Sanaullah, Khawaja Asif and others in the case.

Police sources had revealed that former Punjab law minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah was the mastermind of Model Town carnage.

Sanaullah had directed to launch an operation against the Model Town protesters despite then home secretary Azam Suleman’s opposition, they added.

On June 17, 2014, Punjab police went to remove the barriers placed outside PAT Chief Dr Tahirul Qadri’s residence and MQI Secretariat in Model Town .

The workers of MQI resisted the move which led to a deadly clash leaving 14 workers dead and dozens injured.
