ISLAMABAD - After members of the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CPP) felt offended by the removal of their head Khalid A Mirza and asked the government to revisit its decision, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani acted quickly by announcing his reinstatement within 24 hours. Prime Minister Gilani announced to restore Khalid A Mirza as Chairman of the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) on Saturday. The Prime Minister appreciated the dedication shown by Mirza in discharging his official responsibilities. Mirzas appointment as CCP Chairman is tenure-based for a fixed term of three years from July 2007 to July 2010. Thus, he will complete his term as Chairman CCP. All the members of the Competition Commission unanimously submitted a requisition for calling the meeting of the commission on urgent basis. Hence, the commission met without Khalid A Mirza. Abdul Ghaffar, Member, presided over the hurriedly called meeting the other day. It was unanimously observed that among others, none of the relevant provisions relating to the removal of the chairman was invoked while making the purported removal of Khalid A Mirza as chairman of the commission. The removal by the federal government will undermine and impinge upon the autonomy and independence of the commission. It was forwarded to the highest authorities saying, It must be brought to the notice of the federal government through Ministry of Finance with the request that the announcement regarding the removal of Khalid A Mirza as chairman be withdrawn forthwith. Online adds: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has promoted Tariq Iqbal Poori to Grade 22 and appointed him as Secretary Board of Investment. According to PM House spokesman, Tariq Iqbal Poori was working as additional secretary incharge on this post at Grade 21. But now with his promotion to Grade 22, he has been made federal secretary. He would now take over the charge of secretary of Investment Board as well.
