Dengue danger

The number of dengue patients in Lahore has attained alarming proportions and if serious measures are not taken, it is likely to take the form of an epidemic. Experts have warned the concerned authorities to rise to the occasion and do what needs to be done before it is too late. In the Punjab province, over 1600 dengue patients have been diagnosed and admitted for treatment out of which nearly 1400 are residents of the Lahore city. What is surprising is the fact that a sizeable number are from posh areas including Model town, Gulberg and DHA localities. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has already issued orders to the Health Department to ensure extensive spray in city, particularly those areas from where most of the cases have been registered. The most unfortunate reported fact is that the insecticide available with the department either is adulterated or of low quality. Besides, hardly any precautionary measures have been taken before the disease broke out. The dengue disease could be fatal and has already claimed six lives. This indifference should be taken notice of and action initiated against those responsible for the criminal neglect. The fear is that if immediate spray of the town is not done, it has the potential to become an epidemic.
