MQM back in the fold?

The President, Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani have contacted Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader Altaf Hussain to inquire about his health after his return from hospital to his London residence, in an attempt to resume communication that was disrupted after former Sindh Senior Minister Zulfiqar Mirza unleashed his venom against the MQM. This telephonic contact, in a way, is an attempt to express goodwill and boost the process of reconciliation between two allies aimed at bringing it back into the Sindh government fold. The President has assigned Federal Religious Affairs Minister Syed Khurshid Shah to lead efforts to convince the MQM for its return. Meanwhile, Interior Minister Rehman Malik, in a bid to over-simplify, stated that there was no reason to talk about MQMs return to Sindh government since they had not left it. Qualifying his statement, he said that their resignations were not accepted, so it is not a question of re-joining. There appears to be a possibility that the MQM would stage a comeback soon. Who doesnt know that it cannot survive being out of the power for long. But this on-going drama must come to an end as early as possible. However, it still remains to be seen whether it could effectively defend itself against the charges of serious nature levelled against it by Dr Mirza and also how the Supreme Court views it now that it is sitting in Karachi for suo moto hearing on the Karachi situation.
