LAHORE – The fate of PTI intra-party polls hangs in balance because its core group has failed to reach a consensus on the electoral procedure except at the union council (UC) level, TheNation has learnt.

Sources told this scribe on Wednesday that the core group, in a video conference with party chief Imran Khan on August 4, wasted most of the time by imposing their individual opinion instead of reaching on some common point.

The core group had only decided the procedure of party polls at the UC level, which would be called ‘popular-1 formula’. Under this mechanism a candidate who secured maximum votes in his UC would be elected as its president and the contender who would tail the president would become general secretary. The body would consist of 17 office-bearers at a UC.

While the elected office-bearers of the UC comprise 12 people of which nine would be male and three female and the elected party leaders would nominate the heads of five wings in a UC, which include youth, labour, lawyers, traders and sports and culture wings.

Party sources informed that the trouble makers in the video conference consist of new entrants who accused the old guard of lethargy and no knowledge about the rules of the practical politics.

While the old or founding members in the core group criticised the newcomers for converting the PTI into a party of status quo forces who fear new experiments and desires to take over its reigns by their treacherous tactics.

They further informed that core group members comprise new entrants insisted that ‘popular-1 formula’ should not be adopted even at the UC stage and party leaders should be allowed to field their panels at all levels of the intra-party polls.

On the contrary, the old guard part of the core group strongly supported holding the party polls at all levels, as they believed that this procedure could be the only guarantee to send real party men to party offices.

“In a bid to make a temporary ceasefire among the warring factions of new and old leaders in the core group, a week time has been given to the policy making body for reaching some common ground over the matter,” sources added.

Senior PTI leader Ijaz Chaudhary when contacted confirmed that ‘popular-1 formula’ would be adopted for the intra-party polls at the UC level. However, he said, the procedure for the remaining levels of the party elections would be decided before the first phase of the elections.

Meanwhile, the party sources informing this scribe about the schedule of the intra-party polls said party elections would start from Islamabad on September 15, while Khyber Pukhtunkhawa comes second in the schedule in which party elections would start from September 16 and concludes at September 30.

In Punjab, the party polls would start from October 1 and would end at October 15, while in Balochistan and Sindh it would start from October 15 and would conclude at October 30.
