Raja, Basra offer to court arrest

LAHORE – Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly Raja Riaz and Deputy Opposition Leader Shaukat Basra, along with some other PPP parliamentarians, reached the Central Police Office (CPO) on Wednesday to offer themselves for court arrest.
However, the police refused to arrest the PPP leaders and they were told by a senior officer to approach the police station concerned for their court arrest. The police had registered a case against Basra on the complaint of Haroonabad town municipal officer (TMO) for alleged land grabbing.
Raja, Basra and other PPP MPAs from Punjab also chanted slogans against the provincial government and claimed that they were being implicated in fake cases on political grounds.
Talking to reporters outside the IG office, Basra said the Punjab government had got registered fake cases against him. On this occasion, SSP (Admin) Sohail Sukhera refused to arrest Shaukat Basra on which the PPP leader said it was a proof of his innocence.
Police sources believe that the MPAs went to see the IGP to discuss the issue with him, but the provincial police chief was not present in his office since he was presiding over a high-level meeting on law and order at Police Lines Qila Gujjar Singh at that time.
