LAHORE - Three Punjab University Institute of Communication Studies lady lecturers, rumoured to be favourites, failed to get through GAT examination, doubting transparency in the institute MPhil PhD admission process.

PU ICS on Thursday displayed the first merit list of successful candidates of MPhil and PhD amid the complaints of favoritism in admissions process by some unsuccessful candidates.

According to first merit list, 15 candidates have qualified for PhD admission, 15 for MPhil Research Track and 20 for MPhil Professional Track. The varsity directed the successful candidates to submit fee after producing original certificates and the second list will be displayed on Saturday.

A total of 45 candidates submitted applications for PhD admission, 43 appeared in the written test and 27 qualified for interview and 23 declared successful after calculation of total aggregate. Five out of 23 disqualified in GAT Subject test reducing the number to 18. The ICS displayed list of 15 candidates and three candidates are in the waiting list.

For admission to MPhil Research Track, 177 candidates submitted applications, out of which 160 appeared in the test and 48 qualified for the interview and 26 declared successful. One candidate failed to pass GAT General Test. The ICS displayed first merit list of 15 candidates and 10 are in the waiting list.

A total of 207 candidates submitted applications for MPhil Professional Track, out of which 181 appeared in the test and 42 qualified for interview and 24 declared successful. Two candidates couldn’t qualify in GAT General Test and two remained fail to submit required documents. The ICS displayed merit list of all 20 successful candidates.

The three lady lecturers of ICS, who have been serving the institute for many years, were declared not only successful in entry test and interview, but one of them–Maleeha Laghari–was topper in entry test for both MPhil in research and professional tracks.

Sources said that PU ICS delayed the entry test for three days to give ‘favour’ to Maleeha Laghari as she was not present in town on the test day. The university advertised that the entry test in all discipline will be held on July 18, 2013 but the ICS conducted it on July 21.

Although, the three lady teachers managed to get success in entry test and interview conducted by their own institute, but the fate was not with them everywhere, as they failed in the GAT test.

Two of them Shafia Bhatti and Sana Naveed Khan were in the race to get admission in PhD while Maleeha Laghari was aspirant to get enrolled in MPhil programme.
