LAHORE - Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari yesterday reached the city along with his sister Bakhtawar Zardari on a week-long visit.

Bilawal Bhutto and his sister were received by PPP Central Punjab President Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo and South Punjab President Makhdoom Ahmad Mahmood on their arrival at Bilawal House.

It is the first visit of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, which he is undertaking to deal with the matters relating to the party and its organisation in the Punjab. The visit of Bilawal is very important as the party workers had been waiting for his arrival in the Punjab for the last many months, but he could not undertake this sojourn mainly for security reasons. This time PPP is believed to be at all-time lowest ebb of its popularity in the Punjab and the party workers are badly dismayed as they feel ignored by the leadership. The workers desperately need encouragement from the leadership to get back into the mainstream politics. The current visit, when his father is abroad, is very vital in this background.

The PPP which ruled the Punjab in 70s and in the early years of 90s has just eight seats in this provincial assembly of total 373. This province had factored in the victory of PPP in 1970 and 1993 elections, enabling the party to come to power. During the stay, Bilawal Bhutto is due to hold meetings with the PPP office bearers at district and tehsil levels to discuss the matters of the party mobilisation ahead of the local government elections in the Punjab.

All activity of Bilawal Bhutto will take place at the Bilawal House. In connection with the Defence Day, he will take part in Quran-khwani for the 1965 martyrs on Sunday (today). In the first three days, he will hold meetings with the office bearers from South Punjab and in the other three day with the office holders of Central Punjab organisations. He will also hold meetings with senior party members to receive suggestions for reactivating PPP and addressing grievances of general workers to convince them to stand by the party.

On the last day of his stay, Bilawal Bhutto will attend a dinner. Senior PPP leader and political coordinator to Asif Ali Zardari, Naveed Chaudhry, said Bilawal’s meetings would be exclusively held with the party leaders and workers. Taking to The Nation, he said the visit of the PPP chairman would go a long way to put things in order before the local government elections in the Punjab besides mobilising the workers. He said PPP had decided not to enter electoral alliance with any party in the local government elections, adding office bearers at district level had been allowed to go for seat adjustments, keeping in view the local situation.
