LAHORE - The Jashan-e-Baharan Mela, celebrated traditionally to mark the spring season, is in full swing in the City. Beautification of the Lahore Canal, the glamorous segment of the carnival festival, has also come at its prime stage as more than 35 floats of boats have also been placed in the canal. The floats loaded with models of historical buildings and monuments are masterly decorated to attract the people passing through them. The view becomes more fascinating in night when flamboyant lights illuminate the floats. People along with their families are found visiting the canal in large numbers after sunset. A visitor said the people were distressed due to the ongoing terror acts and the past political ambivalence and needed some respite. The launch of this Mela has let the people to heave the sigh of relief, he added. This years spring festival has carried six segments including flower festival, city dTcor, painting exhibition among the children, programme of songs of Sufis (Muslim saints), floats of boats and Mushaira at the Race Course and Alhamra. The show of the floats is currently going on with full thunder and Mushahira will conclude the Jashan-e-Baharan Mela. Due to the last days downpour and windstorm, about five to six floats were damaged. They have been repaired and placed again to mesmerize the people. It may be recalled that Mela scheduled to be launched on March 23, had to be postponed till an appropriate time due to some security reasons and some problems in the release of water by the Irrigation Department in the canal. It was launched formally some days back and would conclude probably on April 20. PHA Additional Director General Javed Ahmed told The Nation on Monday that Jashan-e-Baharan Mela was a traditional festival. There were some apprehension to launch it due to one and another reason but at last we decided to start it against all odds to make the people feel the arrival of spring. PHA Director Monitoring and Operation Shahid Nadeem said the PHA had planned to organise the Mela at low level as situation was not so conducive to mark it on mega level. Therefore, all the segments of the show was not projected and propagated, he said. He hoped that 'Mushahira, the last segment of the Mela, would be held in coming days
