Police fail to tackle militants in Gadap Town

KARACHI - Police have failed to take action against the militants hiding in various localities of Gadap Town, sources complained to The Nation here on Monday. As per report, hundreds of the displaced families and individuals from the terror-hit tribal areas of the NWFP province have settled in the metropolis. These people have found shelters in different parts of Gadap Town including Machchar Colony, Yasrab Colony, Afghan Camp, Kochi Camp, Janjar Goth, Gull Goth, Faqir Goth, Jamali Goth, Chanaiser Goth and other localities. It is pertinent to mention here that a number of bloody incidents have taken place in Gadap Town due the presence of militants in the area. A few months back, four policemen were killed and a dozen others sustained serious injures when militants opened fire on a team of Anti-Violence and Crime Unit (AVCU). The team had entered the area to recover renowned filmmaker Staish Anand, whom the militants had kidnapped for ransom. In another incident at a local bank in New Subzimandi area, security guards killed a suicide bomber, who was allegedly a resident of the Janjar Goth. Source further said that police were reluctant to point out the presence of militant groups in the area. There are ample indications alarming the law enforcers about the gravity of the situation but no concrete action has so far been taken against the militants. The presence of such criminal elements constitute a serious threat to the lives of citizens. 10 held in separate cases Police have arrested two culprits accused in the charges of robbing the house of former Inspector General of Police, Sindh, Bashir Ahmed Siddiquis sister and killing her servant. Eight persons were also arrested in separate raids from different parts of the City. Addressing a Press conference at Boat Basin police station on Monday, South Zone Investigation I SSP Shahid Hayat disclosed that the culprits namely Mohammad Altaf was arrested from Lahore while the arrest of another Ahsan Ali alias Bilawal was made from Abdullah Shah Ghazi shrine in Clifton. On March 16, the arrested persons entered the house of Dr Tasleem Alvi, the sister of former IGP Sindh Bashir Qureshi, located within the jurisdiction of Boat Basin police station. After being tied her with rope, they robbed one and a half million rupees cash and US$5,000 American dollars and killed her servant, Mashooq Ali, over resistance. After registering the case, the special police party was formed to probe the case. The SSP also claimed to have recovered the looted money from their possession. The culprits are relatives of deceased Ali and their arrests were made with the help of a mobile phone that they looted during robbery, he added. Hayat said earlier that his police party had probing the murder case of Karachi Port Trust (KPT) Union President Amin Shiblis wife by arresting his son and daughter-in-law. In another incident, Gulshan-e-Iqbal police arrested 3 culprits belonging to the separate gangs of extortionists. Gulshan Town SP Arib Maher while addressing a Press conference at New Town police station on Monday said that the two suspects, Mohsin and Ahsan, threatened the Karachi University Professor Javaid Akhtar and were demanding one million rupees. Their arrests were made from University Road with the help of a mobile phone that they used for threatening. The SP further said in another incident, police arrested another culprit, Sheran Ali, who demanded the extortion money from a citizen, Saud Asif. Sheran was arrested from Gulistan-e-Johar. Meanwhile, five held for street crime. Bilal Colony and New Karachi Industrial Area police have arrested five culprits in separate raids. New Karachi Town SP Dr Farooq Ahmed said the arrested men were involved in various cases of street crime. Five TT pistols were also recovered from their possession. Further investigation is under way, he added.
