KARACHI - Federal Minister for Health, Mir Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani, has said that present government was spending huge funds to improve health facilities for masses despite acute economic constraints. He said that his ministry was intending to formulate legislation to take strict action against the quacks who were the main cause behind the rapid spread of various diseases including TB. Talking to newsmen during his visit to Dow Medical University Here Monday, he said quack manage to get them spared from any action by greasing the palms of concerned officials, but now strict action including heavy fines would be suggested in the new law. Earlier, visiting the Dow Institute of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, he appreciated the services of Dow University of Health Sciences towards the welfare of the humanity beside provision of education in the field of health sciences. He said that Prof. Dr. Masood Hameed Khan Vice Chancellor of DUHS and his team rightly deserve the credit. He asked for the suggestions from the Dow University of Health Sciences to enhance the services of the institute & promised to extend his fullest cooperation in this regard. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Masood Hameed Khan, in his address, presented history of the Dow University of Health Sciences, saying that Dow Institute of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation was the very first institute of its kind in Pakistan to cater to the needs of the physically handicapped, who were provided with the artificial limbs in case they lose them due to some injury or accident. Beside the institute is running Bachelors and Masters programs in Occupational Therapy & Physical Therapy, he added. Director Dow Institute of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Dr. Nabila Soomro told the audience that the institute offers the best possible treatment through Physical Therapy & Occupational Therapy. The deserving patients are provided the limbs free of charge and almost 1050 patients out of 1200 registered patients have been given the artificial limbs. These people now are not only leading a normal life but are also supporting their families. Mir Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani further said that so far the health sector was working without a policy but the present democratic government had devised a strategy enhance health facilities at grassroots level during the next few years. Talking about the fatality of hepatitis B and C, the Minister said that negligent doctors were actually spreading such fatal diseases in the country by using the same syringe for different patients. He said there was dire need to spread awareness about this fatal disease. He added that quacks were also responsible in spread of hepatitis in the country.
