GILGIT  - Scarcity of food and other commodities gripped Gilgit and other districts Friday as curfew was being continuously enforced on the fourth consecutive day to maintain law and order in the city.Situation remained tense across Gilgit-Baltistan as security forces arrested more than 100 suspected people during overnight patrolling in the streets of Gilgit following the recent spate of violence.Roads remained deserted, while locals complained of running short of food items in their homes due to the imposition of curfew. There was grave shortage of daily use items in the markets, as supply is suspended since the violence erupted on Tuesday after which all the roads are blocked. On the other hand, more troops were deployed in Skardu, while security forces took the non-locals into their custody. A complete shutter down strike was observed in Chilas and all government and private businesses remain shut.Demonstrators continued their protest in Skardu, Chilas and other areas for the release and recovery of arrested and missing persons.The citizens have demanded the Gilgit-Baltistan and federal governments for bringing the situation under control and arresting elements behind Tuesday’s violent incidents which left at least 14 people dead and more than 50 others injured.Meanwhile, the government has appealed the religious leaders to advise their followers to remain calm and help the security forces in restoring peace in the region.
