LAHORE - PML-Q president Ch Shujaat Hussain said that the Army should not be treated as domestic servant.

He said this while talking to media at his residence here on Sunday.

Asked whether the way of martial law could be stopped through amendments in the constitution, Ch Shujaat said that as a matter of truth, the institution of Army should be accepted with good intention; they (army men) should neither be treated as domestic servant nor humiliated.

Citing an instance in this regard, he said during the tenure of Mr. Junejo, a Minister of State did not allow that a chair should be placed across the table in front of him. Whenever a senior army officer came to meet him, he would look downwards as if he was reading something and ask for a chair after keeping the army officer standing for couple of minutes.

Ch Shujaat in reply to another question said it was rather strange that Head of the State was being reported as saying he after being asked by the PM in writing would grant pardon to Musharraf if he was handed over death sentence. The PML-Q leader posed a question whether to say this even before the court verdict doesn’t fall in the category of contempt of court.

He said Army never comes into power with permission, as only one jeep and two trucks of military personnel are required for this. Trucks keep standing outside, a military general goes inside in jeep, salutes the PM and says “Sir, we are ready, let’s go” and the whole procedure is completed in just 15 or 20 minutes.

Ch Shujaat Hussain emphatically said that the interests of Pakistani farmers should be taken care while having agricultural trade with India. He said that his party was defeated in connivance with the Returning Officers not through voters.

Replying to other questions, Ch Shujaat Hussain said that holding of local bodies’ election was a constitutional requirement, and any violation in this connection falls in the category of treason. He maintained that in fact the PML-N does not want to hold local bodies’ elections and the constitution was being trampled with regard to the local bodies’ elections.

In replying to another question, he said that Punjab CM Shahbaz Sharif is pursuing politics of vindictiveness. “I have come to know that many of the senior PML leaders, who had left our party, are ashamed of their conduct and used to say that they had not done something good by leaving the PML-Q.”

In response to another query, Ch Shujaat said, “Our party was not defeated by voters in general elections but it was defeated with the connivance of the Returning Officers. The army officials had not allowed him and Ch Pervaiz Elahi to enter the Returning Officer office,” he further said.

Answering another question, he said that the system of Pakistan’s economy could not be set right with the induction of one and half billion dollars. He said their government had broken the begging bowl but the present govt has picked up “deg” keep pouring into it. He said one could only smile after listening to Punjab CM’s lofty claim of setting up the world’s biggest steel mill in Chiniot. The rulers are not able to run the existing steel mill, he added.

To another question, he said hat former Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry had badly affected the privatisation process of Pakistan Steel Mills, which pushed the PSM to face such kind of destruction. Shujaat said that nothing could be said about ultimate outcome of the government-Taliban peace talks.
