LAHORE - A full bench of the Lahore High Court on Monday adjourned until April 7 (today) the hearing of a petition challenging Signal Free Corridor Project of Lahore Development Authority.

IA Rehman, Imrana Tiwana, Ayaz Amir, Faryal Ali Gohar and 15 other notables had filed the petitions against Signal Free corridor Project questioning the project terming it against the environment, being carried out under illegal authority and by usurping the share of funds of different areas other than Lahore.

Advocate Salman Akram Raja argued on behalf of the said petitioners submitting that in Lahore 40 per cent people were pedestrian, 22 percent motor bikers and 8 percent car holders.

He said among pedestrian, more are women and this project would add their miseries at the expense of 8 per cent motorists. He said according to another study by a Karachi university about the signal free corridors in Karachi, he said minor road accidents are replaced with major accidents. He said they also have contributed to the traffic jams in remote areas. He said same case will be in Lahore.

The counsel further argued that Signal Free Corridor at Jail Road, which is 7.5 kilometer long, will add to the traffic jams ahead Qartaba Chowk and Liberty Chowk which are end points of it. He said presently there are three traffic signal on Main Boulevard Gulberg from Siddique Trade Center to Liberty Roundabout and still severe traffic jams was reported from the Roundabout.

He said the Environmental Impact Assessment was also carried out illegally and against the due legal process. He also questioned the legal status of the LDA to carry out this project. He said the LDA can carry out such projects under the local government which are not in place.

He said as the date is fixed for local bodies elections therefore such development projects should be suspended till revival of the local bodies to ensure democratic process implemented.

He said the LDA having its jurisdiction extended to Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahib was ignoring those areas but using their funds only for a particular area of Lahore which was usurpation of funds.
