If the PM of Pakistan cannot deliver his maiden address to the nation, without approval of his party co-chairman Mr Zardari, than prudence and propriety demands, that the party head should have been present in the country, instead of making the whole nation wait. Everybody in Pakistan knows the importance of Mr Zardari. There is no doubt that he, Mian Nawaz Sharif, Asfandyar Wali are the real power brokers. They need an element of maturity, though, so that people in power are not seen to be throwing their weight around unnecessarily. Mr Zardari heads the PPP, a party which has had leaders of international repute like Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto. These were leaders with political acumen who had their finger on the pulse of the nation. Political leaders cannot afford to be seen as going against the tide. Politics has no place for people who want to run their party like a wadera and feel proud to be called one or want to be portrayed as one. It is too soon after coming into power to be isolated from your constituency and be surrounded by sycophants and courtiers, who nod their heads on everything you say and dare not say the truth. It was expected of Mr Zardari to be smarter than this and use his newly acquired status with discretion and care. His choice of controversial appointments in KPT, PIAC, KBCA, Planning Commission etc will haunt him in the days to come. -NAZEER ABRO, Hyderabad, via e-mail, July 21.
