PTTF recommends convicted player for top award

LAHORE The Pakistan Table Tennis Federation has nominated a British-convicted former Pakistan player for countrys top civil award. It has been learnt that the PTTF nominated former champion Farjad Saif for the civil award to be announced on August 14. Farjad, a former national champion, was convicted in 1997 in England during the World Table Tennis Cup. He was charged of making dirty calls from the hotel room and was booked by Stipendiary Magistrate Paul Richardson. Farjad remained in the police custody until the court ended his conviction. Farjad was held during the championship held at Manchester for making dirty calls from his hotel room. Farjad, 30 then, made about 20 calls and admitted before the police: I am the one who had been making the naughty calls. Richardson while convicting the player said: Your behaviour was disgrace. It was totally unacceptable and disgusting. You have let yourself and your country down. Due to his conviction, Farhad had to miss his World Championship match and was also ordered to pay 35 pounds as fine money. When contacted, PTTF president Malik Riaz confirmed the nomination of Farjad for the top award of the country but said that he did not made the nomination and instead it (the nomination) came from the former federation. He further said that the best player of his times was picked for such an award and when the name was proposed it if forwarded to the board for approval. It must be kept in mind that the PTTF has a notorious record. Recently, during the World Championships held in Russia, Pakistans top table tennis player Salim Abbas missed the match and a walk over was given against Pakistan. It was then learnt that the player was on a dinner with the PTTF president. But on return they said that the organisers did not intimate them about the change of time in the match and Abbas reached the venue nearly an hour late. And now, another blooper of the federation has come to the fore which raises many a questions in the nomination of a convicted former player for such a big countrys award.
