Mediterranean countries are dealing with a sweltering heat wave and catastrophic wildfires, which, according to EU Commissioner for the Environment Virginijus Sinkevicius are "the worst in decades".

Sputnik is live from Greece as devastating wildfires spread across the country, approaching Athens. Multiple settlements have been evacuated due to the blaze, while the capital is covered by the thick smoke coming from the immense fires in the suburbs.

Greek authorities previously had to evacuate people from Lake Marathon in eastern Attica, which is a major source of water for Athens.
