LAHORE - The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the Excise and Taxation Department to stop harassing the business community by issuing unnecessary notices for the recovery of professional tax. In joint statement issued after receiving a number of complaints from business leaders, the LCCI President Mian Muzaffar Ali, Senior Vice President Tahir Javed Malik and Vice President Irfan Iqbal Sheikh said that the aggressive campaign launched 'by Excise and Taxation Department was not only earning a bad name for the government but was also creating undue disturbance for the businessmen. The LCCI Office-bearers said that the LCCI had always been of the opinion that tax base should be broadened to generate revenue instead of twisting the arm of those who were already in the tax net. The LCCI office-bearers also stressed the need for rationalization of taxes as the existing rates are exorbitant and adding up to already high cost of doing business in Pakistan besides coming in the way of broadening of tax net. The LCCI office-bearers also urged the government to evolve all the business-related policies with the consultation of business community for their implementation in letter and spirit. Meanwhile, the LCCI President Mian Muzaffar Ali has constituted a two-member committee comprising Vice President of Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry Irfan Iqbal Sheikh and Executive Committee member Sardar Usman Ghani to look into the matter and finalise their recommendations to be forwarded to the government.
