ISLAMABAD   -   Islamabad: Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Monday inaugurated Pakistan’s first-ever eco friendly plastic road in Islamabad.

Talking to media, he said the construction of plastic road would decelerate the spread of pollution in the region. He said the initiative was aimed at reducing impact of environmental pollution caused by plastic waste.

Rashid said, the concept would not only be utilised in Islamabad but would also be replicated in other cities of the country. He appreciated Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Amer Ali Ahmed for initiating plastic road project in the federal capital.

To a question about the Sialkot tragedy, the interior minister said government would not tolerate extremism at any cost. He underscored the need for speedy trial of the accused persons in Sialkot incident.

Pakistan’s first plastic road is paved in Islamabad to create a scalable solution for plastic to be used in high-value production.

The one-kilometre road on Ataturk Avenue is a project by Coca-Cola Pakistan with Capital Development Authority and the National Incubation Centre.

The road construction utilized about ten tones of plastic bottles collected for this purpose and serves as a model for nation-wide practice.

Coca-Cola Pakistan and Afghanistan vice president Fahad Ashraf said, “This road belongs to all Pakistanis, and all the people who care about progress.”

Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Amer Ali Ahmed said, “This plastic road project will set the stage for the future of innovation within our joint sustainability drive with the Coca-Cola Company. What is particularly exciting is how this opens us up to the possibility of making this a reality across the nation.”

A ceremonial walk was arranged by students, wilderness experts, people with disabilities, trans communities as well as leaders from the private sector.
