One killed as riots erupt in DG Khan

DERA GHAZI KHAN/MULTAN - One person was killed as violent protests erupted in Dera Ghazi Khan Friday after a suicide blast on Thursday killed 35 Shia mourners. Angry mobs set ablaze a police picket, a number of motorcycles, ransacked shops, a bank and a CNG station. The heirs of blast victims chanted slogans against the police at DHQ Hospital when senior advisor to Punjab government, Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa, was distributing cheques among the injured along with provincial Minister for Local Government Sardar Dost Mohammad Khan Khosa. The protesters attacked Markaz Almodat and tried to set ablaze shops. They pelted ambulances of Rescue 1122 with stones. All the educational institutions, banks and markets remained closed all day long to mourn the killings. One person was killed and eight injured Friday during protests in the town of Uch Sharif, 60 kilometres south of Dera Ghazi Khan, police said. The violence erupted after 70 to 80 Shia took to the streets and threw stones at the shops of Sunni traders. "Sunni traders also threw stones at Shia protesters and in the scuffle one person was killed and eight others wounded," local police official Azhar Hameed told AFP, adding police had brought the situation under control. Meanwhile, part of the face and head of the suspected suicide bomber was found at the blast site and he appeared to be an 18 to 20-year-old bearded man," said Sardar Zulfikar Khosa, senior adviser to chief minister. All the major roads of the city were blocked by the protesters. They burnt tyres at Pul Piyare Wali, Pul Andhay Wali, Faisal Chowk, Jampur Road, Traffic Chowk, Pul Dot, Quaid-e-Azam Road and other parts of the city. The transporters shifted their vehicles from the bus stand and the stand was presenting a deserted look. Upon the arrival of angry mob at a police station on General Bus Stand, the law personnel deployed there whisked away, leaving the protesters to set it ablaze. The club-wielding rioters marched through different roads while a very low number of police officials were deployed on the city roads. However, a huge contingent of police was deployed on the routes of VVIPs' movement after the arrival of senior advisor Zulfiqar Khosa, Provincial Minister Sardar Dost Muhammad Khosa, IG Police Punjab Shaukat Javaid and Home Secretary Khusro Pervaiz. The protesters ransacked a CNG station located on Manba Canal and a bank on Traffic Chowk. The district police as well as officials of DHQ Hospital failed to display the list of the dead and injured after even the 24 hours of the incident. The families of the blast victims shouted slogans when senior advisor arrived in the hospital. He along with other VVIPs was taken out in police custody where the convey was again interrupted by the protesters. Upon the intervention of a Shia leader, the protesters cleared the road outside the main entrance of DHQ Hospital. Sardar Zulfiqar Khosa awarded cheques among the injured and directed staff for t heir proper treatment. The Nimaz-e-Jinaza of 21 blast victims was offered in the ground of Government Boys High School. Thousands of people attended the funeral rites of the victims. Among others Provincial Minister Sardar Dost Muhammad Khosa, MNA Sardar Muhammad Saifuddin Khan Khosa and people from all walks of life attended the Nimaz-e-Jinaza. IGP Punjab Shaukat Javaid said at least 28 persons have been taken into custody over DG Khan bomb blast. Talking to the media persons at DHQ Hospital, the IG Police said the arrested suspects included members of banned outfits, Afghans and other persons. To a question, he said to probe the element of police negligence in the attack incident, a separate inquiry has been initiated under the report of which strict action would be taken. He declared it a suicide attack. He said the body parts of the suspected suicide bomber have been dispatched to Lahore for DNA test. After 24 hours of the blast, the district police could not release the sketch of the suspected bomber. The police officials said the age of the attacker was around 20 years. They claimed half of the head and lower body portion of the bomber were traced. In Multan, the Dera Ghazi Khan Imambargah blast also sparked strong reaction, as the citizens, religious and civil society organisations brought out rallies and staged protest demonstrations in different areas of the city on Friday. The protesters demanded of the government to immediately arrest and penalise the culprits involved in this inhuman incident. The Imamia Students Organisation staged a protest demonstration outside Multan Press Club while Jafriya Students Organisation brought out a rally in Sooraj Miani, Tanzeem Shehriyan Multan that marched from Shah Shamas Darbar to Daulat Gate and SPO staged a protest demonstration outside Multan Press Club. Holding placards and banners, the protesters chanted slogans against government and terrorists. In many areas like Daulat Gate, Nawan Shehr and Sooraj Miani Chowk, the traffic remained suspended due to rallies and demonstrations. Addressing the protesters, the speakers said the terrorists had been given free hand to play with the lives of the people. They said that entire security apparatus of the state was deployed to safeguard the rulers while the people were left at the mercy of killers. They said thousands of people were so far killed across the country in terrorism incidents but no culprit was arrested so far. They demanded of the government to immediately form a high-level inquiry committee to launch probe into the incident and unveil the faces of the culprits. They also called for immediate action against the officials concerned for making inappropriate security arrangements.
