KARACHI - Bomb Disposal Squad on Thursday defused a 13-kg bomb at Habib Bank intersection, Karachi.
Police said the bomb was placed near the roundabout when a passerby saw something suspicious and informed the police. Police rushed to the spot and informed the BDS experts.
Law enforcers cordoned off the area and also stopped the traffic till the BDS managed to defuse the bomb after the efforts of half an hour. The BDS experts pointed out that the improvised explosive device carried 9-kg explosives, two kilogrammes pellets, detonators and batteries. It had been contacted with remote control. Two more suspicious bags were also found from Arambagh area and at the office of water board at Sharah-e-Faisal but both the calls were found hoax as the BDS experts found nothing during the search.
RELATIVES OF ‘CRIMINALS’ PROTEST AGAINST POLICE
Score of relatives and residents of two alleged criminals, who were gunned down in separate ‘encounters’ by the police, staged protest against the police.
The family and friends of victim Shah Kalam Mehsud, president of District East of Pakhtoon Students Federation, took out a rally against the police from Federal Urdu University to Karachi Press Club against the extra judicial killing of Kalam.
Protesters said Kalam was picked up from his residence by Sohrab Goth Police and was later killed in a fake encounter.
Similarly, the family and relatives of Javaid Barki staged sit-in protest at Gharibabad railway crossing against the extra judicial killing by the New Karachi Police. Police claimed to have killed Javaid in an encounter. Later, it termed Javaid as an attacker who was aiming to target the police mobile when the encounter occurred.
The family said Javaid was arrested from Azizabad area where he was at an Internet café. Later police took him to New Karachi area and killed him in an encounter. Both the families chanted slogans against the brutal killing of innocent people. They demanded to arrest the policemen involved in the extrajudicial murders. Police high ups assured the family of Kalam about justice and constituted a committee to probe the murder.
