ISLAMABAD -  National Security Adviser and former Lt Gen Nasser Khan Janjua has emphasised that the sitting government of Afghanistan can play a major role in bringing peace in Afghanistan.

“More than anyone else, the sitting government of Afghanistan can play a major role to bring peace in Afghanistan, though collectively we have to find a way to a better future,” NSA reaffirmed, while talking to British envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan Gareth Bayley, who called on him here on Tuesday.

According to sources, British Prime Minister’s Special Representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan Gareth Bayley accompanied by British High Commissioner to Pakistan Thomas Drew, met National Security Adviser Janjua and exchanged views on regional peace, security and stability with reference to evolving political and security situation in Afghanistan.

The diplomatic efforts of Pakistan and the United Kingdom to bring Islamabad and Kabul closer are paying off as Afghanistan and Pakistan have resumed their engagement by undertaking high-level visits during the past two weeks.

Islamabad and Kabul have also agreed to kick off meetings of their working groups in order to resolve key issues between the two neighbours.

The national security adviser reiterated Pakistan's commitment to regional peace and security.

He said Pakistan had always supported all Afghanistan-related peace initiatives.

Janjua said peace in Afghanistan was vital for peace in Pakistan.

“We are sincere and committed to Afghanistan and its people,” he added.

Both sides discussed security situation in Afghanistan at length.

The national security adviser explained the complexities of the perpetual conflict, and highlighted the contributions made by Pakistan to fight the menace of terrorism.

Both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation to ensure lasting peace in Afghanistan and the region emphasising need for Pakistan and Afghanistan resuming engagement at all levels.

Janjua stressed that more than anyone else, the sitting government of Afghanistan could play a major role to bring peace in Afghanistan.

Janjua appreciated the efforts of the UK for investing in peace in Afghanistan, and said that the UK had always played a positive role for peace and stability of Afghanistan and the region.
