Today marks the birthday of famous novelist and social critic, Charles Dickens. Widely revered as the most influential novelist of his time, Dickens used his literary skills to bring about societal change in Britain, during the Victorian era. This was done by works such as Oliver Twist, David Copperfield among other classics. In the contemporary time, the profound effect that Dickens writings’ can be alluded to in great detail. However, the unique aspect of his writings was the highlight on the inequality faced by the majority underclass in British society. Dicken’s prose ensured that readers from higher stratifications gained more empathy about the struggle of the lower economic status individuals. This was done by the vivid imagery in his novels. Even in countries like Pakistan, it is very important to have social commentary like this to ensure that the peripheral groups of society are taken into account. And, injustice and desensitisation towards the plight of minorities end.
