No single party can surmount crises: Nawaz

KARACHI PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday underlined the need for implementing the Charter of Democracy (CoD) as decided by all the political parties, saying that the implementation of CoD is necessary to steer the country out of present crises. He was addressing a Press conference along with Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah at CM House here following his visit to the gutted Bolton Market. Nawaz said those who violated the Constitution should be punished and they should not be given guard of honour for such violations. He maintained that PPP and other political parties are national assets of the country, asserting that the PPP is an important political force and it should persist in the political system. He said the country was facing various problems, and one single party alone could not tackle all the problems. He said it is not the proper time to launch any movement against the government. Nawaz called on all political forces to join hands to seek solution to the national problems. To a query, he emphasised that if any conspiracy was hatched against the government, then PML-N would be at the forefront to foil this bid. He underlined the need for tolerating the criticism on each other for the betterment of the system. The PML-N Chief said loadshedding and other problems are the gifts the dictator gave to the country as no practical steps were taken during eight years to overcome these challenge s. He deplored the torching of Bolton Market. On the occasion, Qaim Ali Shah said the PPP and PML-N are working for democracy in the country. Qaim said stern action would be taken against those found responsible for the Ashura incident. He said the affected traders and victim families would be assisted by the government. Senior Sindh Minister Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq, Federal Minister Babar Ghouri, PML-N leaders Syed Ghous Ali Shah, Sardar Rahim and others were also present on the occasion. Nawaz Sharif also visited Bolton Market and the site of Ashura blast that resulted in the killing of 46 people and injuries to dozens others. The PML-N chief was accompanied by Qaim Ali Shah during the visit. On the occasion, he met the affected members of business community and assured them of his partys full support in this hour of difficulty. Leaders of the business community including Siraj Qasim Telli, Zubair Motiwala and others apprised the PML-N chief of the losses the businessmen, shopkeepers and traders of the countrys biggest wholesale market had suffered. Nawaz, after going around the ruins of the gutted shops, felt shocked and expressed grief over the incident, saying that Karachi was the economic hub of the country and loss of the affected market was the loss of the entire country. He demanded the government that culprits of the bomb explosion, subsequent arson and ransacking incident should be arrested. He condemned the incident of bomb explosion and burning of the wholesale market, saying that it was a heinous crime that had taken precious lives of innocent people. It was malicious and heinous crime that resulted in unprecedented losses to the traders and shopkeepers and the perpetrators of this act must be brought to book, Nawaz maintained. On that occasion, the affected shopkeepers informed him about the difficulties faced by them in the revival of their business activities. They informed the PML-N chief that issuance of lease document of the affected market was one of the main problem which had been pending for the last many years. Nawaz, thereon, urged the Sindh Chief Minister to resolve the lease issue of the affected shopkeepers. On the occasion, the Sindh CM assured the shopkeepers that the provincial government would resolve the issue at earliest. He also assured that a committee had been formed to look after the rehabilitation process of the shopkeepers. Qaim Ali Shah said that funds allocated for the rehabilitation process would also be released soon. Mian Nawaz Sharif also went to the stall of Edhi Foundation where Abdul Sattar Edhi welcomed him. During the visit the PML-N local leaders including City chapter president Saleem Zia, Nehal Hashmi, Hafeezuddin and others were also present. Agencies add: Nawaz Sharif said his party was playing the role of genuine opposition in the country and did not believe in 'minus one formula. Talking to editors and columnists on Wednesday at breakfast he hosted at a local hotel, he said the PML-N took stand on the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), written-off loans and US Kerry-Lugar Act. Party leaders: Ahsan Iqbal, Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Syed Ghous Ali Shah, Mamnoon Hussain, Pervez Rasheed, Mushahidullah, former Chief Justice of Supreme Court Justice Saeeduzzaman Siddiqui and eminent jurist Fakhruddin G Ebrahim were also present. He ruled out takeover by anti-democratic forces and vowed he would not allow any derailment of the present democratic system. He felt mandate of February 2008 elections should be respected. I feel after pressure on the government 17th amendment in the Constitution would be repealed. Nawaz said no single party can surmount the problems and challenges like political, economic, financial, terrorism, extremism facing Pakistan. We strongly believe that all political forces should join hands and a multi-pronged strategy be formulated to handle militancy. He stressed that the PML-N stands for good governance and would never compromise on corruption. All those involved in corrupt practices should be brought before the courts and national wealth recovered from them whether stashed abroad or in the country.
