rawalpindi - Ayyan Ali succeeded in a bid to halt proceedings in the money smuggling against her yesterday after she obtained a stay order from the Lahore High Court.

Customs, Taxation and Anti Smuggling Court Special Judge Rana Aftab Ahmed Khan adjourned the hearing till January 26 after Ayyan Ali presented the stay order from the Lahore High Court.

There was chaos in the public areas of the court as Ayyan entered when supporters and lawyers jostled to catch a glimpse of the model.

Tight security held back large numbers of her fans and the lawyers, who were already present in the Rawalpindi District Courthouse. The security guards, including those accompanying the model, did not allow anyone to interact her.

The model’s legal team comprised Sardar Khurram Latif Khosa advocate, Shaista Khurram advocate and Nasir advocate. Sardar Khurram Latif Khosa said that her client had challenged the indictment in apex court and the file of case had been summoned by the judge of apex court in Lahore.

The petition there argued that the trial court had indicted her in money smuggling case in haste and without ruling on her pending objections. Khurram said that no trial court could indict the accused without reaching a decision on pleas pending with the court.

“The LHC had summoned Ayyan Ali case file from the trial court that is why the judge could not assume hearing today and adjourned the case till January 26,” Ayyan’s lawyer said.

Ayyan was arrested at the Benazir Bhutto Islamabad International Airport after police alleged she was attempting to smuggle $506,800 on a Dubai-bound flight.

The Customs Court indicted Ayyan for the alleged crime. She was granted bail in July after spending four months in Adiala Jail but was not released until last month as she faced hearings in a succession of courts 18 times.
