Pakistan's Taliban movement has suspended all the peace agreements signed with the new civilian government two months ago in response to the security operation launched on June 28, 2008 by the Frontier Corps which destroyed the hideouts of Lashkar-i-Islam and Ansarul Islam in Bara region of Khyber Agency and suburbs of Peshawar to check the "growing criminal activities" of their militants. It is the first operation, launched at the behest of the elected provincial government. In this respect, NWFP CM Ameer Haider Khan Hoti told the provincial assembly on July 1 that the militants had "established a parallel government and a judicial system" there and the rulers had no option, but to "use force as the writ of the government was being challenged." He made it clear that the army chief had no discretion to decide the ongoing operation. Before him, PM Gilani has also confirmed this statement. As regards the FATA peace process, both the government and Taliban leaders have blamed each other for backing out from peace deals. While people all over Pakistan had heaved a sigh of relief when the new official policy of talks with the militants led to an end of suicide attacks, but the law and order situation had gradually deteriorated. Execution of 22 members of a peace committee in South Waziristan, another eruption of fighting between Lashkar-e-Islam and Ansar-ul-Islam in Khyber Agency and communal attacks in Kurrum Agency might be cited as an example of violence. In Swat too, despite a peace accord subversive acts kept on going in towns where moderate parties have recently won the elections with a majority - indicate that a minority wants to force its point of view on the former. It was in this background that on June 29, Gilani said that some locals had breached the agreement by kidnapping minority persons from Peshawar, demolishing girl's school and executing two persons. He also revealed that the coalition partners had been taken into confidence before the operation and his regime was not under external pressure as Pakistan is a sovereign state. Gilani surprisingly disclosed that there were "several enemies of the country" and "foreign hands were also involved in the acts of terrorism." It reminds the statement of the former Interior Minister, Lt. General (retd) Hamid Nawaz Khan who in an interview with an Arab TV channel on March 1, 2008 had clearly revealed that "the US, India and Afghanistan are involved in creating lawlessness in Pakistan" and are "backing militants outfits involved in terrorism in Pakistan." In this regard, we should not ignore the double-game, being played by the US, India and Afghanistan who are trying to convert Pakistan into another failed state. They think that unrest in FATA regions shall justify the deployment of NATO forces in the country with the pretension that Pakistan is a terrorist state and nuclear weapons may go into the hands of Al-Qaeda. It is mentionable that the US administration has continuously been increasing pressure on Islamabad to call off the talks with the tribal activists. Like other high officials of the State Department, US Defence Secretary of State Robert Gates remarked on June 26 that since Pakistan began negotiating peace deals with the militant groups, violence in east Afghanistan has increased as pressure on the militants have taken off. Recently, a Pentagon report pointed out that Afghanistan is now rivalling Iraq as the biggest cause of concerns for the US. The report coincides with recent warnings by senior US military and intelligence officials that the next plot by Al-Qaeda to attack inside America will be made in Pakistan's FATA regions. In fact, demoralised in crushing the stiff resistance of the Afghan Taliban who have been fighting against the occupying forces, US-led coalition troops, equipped with sophisticated weaponry and Kabul-led puppet regime of Karzai have badly failed in Afghanistan. Besides diverting the attention of their publics from their unsuccessful policy, they want to fulfill a number of aims by supporting the militancy in FATA. In this respect, Karzai's recent threat of chasing militant's locations inside Pakistani territories, just a few days after the US-dominated NATO's airstikes in the Mohmand tribal agency collaborated with the accusation of cross border terrorism in relation to Islamabad. Hence, they intend to sabotage the tribal peace process. India clandestinely favours internal and external pressure on Pakistan to gain leverage in the Pak-India "composite dialogue" which are being held intermittently. It is of particular attention that more than 3 million Afghan refugees who have not retuned to Afghanistan are involved in criminal activities in our country. Some of them are serving as agents of CIA, Raw and Khad and are implementing their hidden agenda. Posing themselves as Pakistani Taliban, they have played a key role in creating a rift between the pro-government activist groups who had agreed for peace accords and those who opposed the same. These elements manipulated the situation and performed their assigned job in re-initiating subversive acts in Swat and other tribal regions with the sole aims to sabotage the peace deals. These agents with dollars in their pockets are distorting the image of the peace-loving Pushtuns of the Frontier province. At this sensitive juncture, when Pakistan is facing grave challenges, the real aim of the external plotters is to create a rift between the army on the one side and the general masses led by the politicians on the other. To achieve their sinister goals, they manipulate any "mishap" that they themselves create as noted in case of FATA regions. At this crucial hour, our political leaders, security forces and the public must have a strong unity to castigate any plot against the tribal peace process.
