RAWALPINDI  - An inauguration ceremony of the project for 'Nullah Leh flood forecasting and warning system would be held here today (Monday), at Pakistan Meteorological Department. These equipment and facilities being given by government of Japan will ensure the accuracy of flood forecasting and expand the transmission network of flood warning during floods. This will mitigate the damage caused by floods to the people residing on both sides of Leh and the national exchequer. The project covers around 7.5 square kilometers of the flood prone area and population of 150,000 will benefit by it. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on the request of government of Pakistan carried out a master plan study in 2001-2003 and Nullah Leh Flood Forecasting and Warning System was installed with the Grant Aid project from government of Japan in 2006-2007. Under the Grant Aid, the equipment and facilities were provided to Federal Flood Commission (FFC), Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) and Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA). Some of the equipment and facilities provided by the project are master control station, rainfall and water level gauge with automatic recorder, 10 warning posts and data monitoring system. The project for strengthening of flood risk management in Nullah Leh- a technical cooperation project from Dec, 2007 to Nov, 2008, is the continuation of the stated projects aimed at establishing a system and structure which enables mass evacuation in the event of floods in the target area. It also focuses on capacity development of the PMD, CDGR and FFC for effective utilisation of flood warning system and awareness and preparedness for floods.
