LAHORE (PPI) - Pakistan Railways has decided that no special and annual repair would be carried out during the current financial year due to financial constraint. It has also been decided that only chief engineer would approve essential and inescapable work. The powers of divisional superintendent and divisional engineers for sanction and approval of civil works were also withdrawn. According to Railways sources, after stopping the repair work including level crossings, snag dead ends, signal cabins, platforms and restoration of station buildings would badly affect. A senior officer told this news agency that due to stop of civil works the rehabilitation work for 690 bridges would badly suffer. This project had been launched after the incident of Run Pathani bridge in Sindh and railways administration had decided to repair all the bridges but railways did not approve even a single rupee for this project during the last one year. The doubling of track project between Lodhran and Raiwind was also not being implemented, similarly track repair between Sukhar and Karachi was not implementing. Due to suspension of the civil works the cost was increasing and railways must revise the work rates in future. The track maintenance work was also being affected after closure of the sleeper factories. The railways authorities have allowed the Chief Engineer for approval of priority works proposed by the different divisions but priority lists was also delaying due to shortage of funds. To a query, sources said that although civil works were not carrying out but train operations would continue because during the inspection of Federal Government Railways Inspector the civil works on emergency basis would continue.
