TOBA TEK SINGH-The Punjab Teachers Union’s Women Wing staged a protest demonstration on Saturday at Shahbaz Sharif Chowk over the failure of city police in recovering kidnapped Headmistress Ms Sumera Bashir of Government Elementary School of Chak 271/GB.Addressing the protesters, PTU President Ms Safia Haq said that it was pity that one week had passed when their fellow teacher was kidnapped during travelling from local general bus stand to school but no action had so been taken by the police after registration of case. She warned that if the situation continued, the teachers will be forced to take out rallies all over the district. STRIKE THREATENED: PML-N MPA from PP 90 Muhammad Rafiq threatened that if the Punjab government did not reduce water supply in Trimmu-Sidhnai link canal, he will observe hunger strike over the issue on stairs outside Punjab Assembly during next session. Addressing a press conference, he claimed that more than 100,000 acres of 200 villages of three districts, Toba, Khanewal and Jhang had been waterlogged due to excess water supply in the said canal as the canal had not been brick lined and crops had been destroyed on said areas' farmland. He added that during budget session, he had announced in his speech in assembly that if in 48 hours the issue was not addressed he will observe hunger strike over which Punjab irrigation minister Mian Yawar Zaman had arranged a meeting with representatives of farmers led by Advocate Shafqat Rasool with secretary irrigation and it was promised that within seven days, the issue will be resolved. He also stated that now seven days had passed so he was forced to again make announcement to observe hunger strike on stairs of assembly as protest in upcoming session. He also said that a brick lining project was approved by chief minister for said canal during last tenure but it was never implemented. Newborn dies in demolition: A newly born daughter of one Muhammad Hanif Joya died on Saturday during the demolition of “illegally constructed” structure in Basti Khan Jawan near Pirmahal. The demolition was being carried out under the supervision of revenue staff including a patwari. Relatives of the baby put her body on Pirmahal-Bhussi road and set tyres on fire as a protest. Resultantly, the road was blocked. The baby was shifted to a hospital for autopsy while Pirmahal AC Adnan Cheema suspended patwari Ahmad Ali and ordered an inquiry. Joya alleged that the patwar jolted his wife and his baby due to which she died. MISHAP IN HAFIZABAD: A citizen of Lahore was killed on the spot while his companion Muhammad Tariq was seriously injured when their car overturned and fell into road side ditch on motorway near Pindi Bhattian on Saturday.According to motorway sources, Abdul Rahim and Muhammad Tariq were on way to Lahore when their car skidded off the road due to high speed. Resultantly, Abdul Rahim died on the spot while Muhammad Tariq sustained serious injuries and was removed to hospital.
