Suspect succumbs to ‘police torture’

LAHORE - A 30-year-old robbery suspect succumbed to police torture in the lock up of Shalimar Police Station on Friday. His body was moved to the morgue for an autopsy.

The deceased was identified by police as Imran, a resident of Mian Channu. He was arrested by police a couple of days ago on the charges of armed robberies.

Police said they were ‘interrogating’ Imran in connection with different robbery cases when his condition got deteriorated in the lock up. The crime suspect was shifted to a hospital where he expired later, police claimed. A duty official at the Shalimar police station said the 30-year-old man “died due to heart attack.”

However, relatives of the deceased reject the police claims and say Imran was tortured to death in police custody.  A relative of the victim who visited city morgue last night told The Nation that the police were demanding huge cash from them. He requested anonymity and said some police officials badly tortured the young man during interrogation. The body will be handed over to the family by police after the autopsy.

Deaths of crime suspects in police custody are quite common in this Punjab province where police kill hundreds of suspects in fake encounters also. Brutal torture and corruption still remain hallmark of the country’s largest law enforcing agency.
