As long as water is flowing from the river to the sea, sea incursion cannot take place. What is required is a small stream of fresh river water to keep flowing below Kotri. The problem is in maintaining this flow throughout the year. As present there is excessive flow in the three flood months and little or no flow in the remaining nine months. The latest foreign consultants study has determined 4.32 maf per annum, or 0.38 maf per month as sufficient to check sea incursion. This amount needs to be stored in dams to provide a regular flow for year round protection of the delta. It will need many more than the present two dams to do the needful. Not building more dam is a death sentence for the delta.-KHURSHID ANWER, Lahore, June 4.
