Two militants, two women and a child were killed and 15 security personnel got injured during an operation against militants in Kharotabad area of Quetta in the wee hours of Thursday.

Police and Frontier Corps (FC) raided a house in Killi Barat area of Kharotabad where some militants were residing.

Sources said that security personnel surrounded the house and asked the inhabitants to surrender but they attacked the lawmen with hand grenades, rockets and heavy weapons. Fifteen security personnel including a Lieutenant Colonel Bilal Ahmed and four officials of intelligence agencies got injured in the attack.

The security forces returned fire and when the combatants found no escape, they blew themselves up with explosives. Two women and a child who happened to be in the house also got killed in the blast.

The locals say that firing started after midnight and continued until morning intermittently. “We also heard heavy explosions that rocked the entire area and spread panic,” they added.

Police Operation DIG Fayyaz Sumbal told the media that law enforcement agencies faced severe resistance for 5 hours, adding that over 20 explosives, including four of improvised explosive device (IED) occurred during the operation. “At 8:00am when security personnel were about to arrest the militants, they exploded themselves,” he added.

The DIG said that security personnel and members of intelligence agencies who sustained injuries in the attack were admitted to the Quetta CMH and were out of danger. The dead bodies were shifted to Quetta Civil Hospital for medico-legal formalities where one of the militant was identified as Habibullah.

Police said that arms and explosives were also recovered from the house.
