Asif, Gilani say don't want confrontation

ISLAMABAD - President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani Friday met, indicating acceptance of some of the demands put forward by PML-N to defuse the ongoing tension, TheNation has learnt. The Prime Minister called on the President at the Presidency and discussed with him current political situation in the country, says a press release issued by Aiwan-e-Sadr. They exchanged views on the reconciliation efforts being made by ANP Chief Asfandyar Wali Khan and JUI-F head Maulana Fazlur Rehman between the government and PML-N leadership. They also talked on the meetings of the Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani with the PML-N leaders. The President and the Prime Minister reiterated that the government did not want the confrontation to persist as it was encouraging political instability in the country. Both the leaders reviewed the demands put forward by PML-N that included immediate end to the Governor Rule in Punjab, replacement of Punjab Governor and invitation to PML-N to form government in Punjab. The meeting also discussed the lawyers' long march, just around the corner, which has the support of PML-N, Jamaat-e-Islami, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and civil society organisations. However, the government is yet undecided over the judges issue, which is considered to be the core issue and on top of the agenda of demands of PML-N. Both the President and the Premier also deliberated on the outcome of the Friday's negotiations between ANP and JUI-F heads with PML-N Qauid Mian Nawaz Sharif held in Lahore. Sources, privy to the Presidency, said there were strong indications that both the warring political parties had broadly agreed on bringing the reconciliation process back on track. But the deadlock is still there on the modalities of restoration of deposed judges. They added the reconciliation between PPP and PML-N high commands could be revived if the former takes some confidence building measures. "The talks are progressing well but the PML-N leaders are seeking guarantee from the mediators to implement the agreement in letter and spirit," sources in the government circles said. There still persists a trust deficit, as PML-N is not relying on the Presidency, keeping in view the past track record of backtracking from the promises. According to these sources, the ball is in the government court and the direct contact between the two sides is mainly depending on the Presidency's response. If the government immediately lifted the Governor Rule and restored the Punjab Government, then there was a possibility to initiate the talks. PML-N has so far not moved an inch from its stance on the restoration of the independent judiciary under Justice Iftikhar Chaudhary, according to sources closely monitoring the developments. Earlier, Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raesani met President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani. Reiterating their stance of conciliation among all political forces in the country, both President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani sounded optimism about resolution of differences with Sharif brothers though negotiation. They were hopeful of the efforts made by Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raesani in this regard. Aslam Raesani called on Prime Minister at his Chamber in the Parliament House after holding meeting with President Asif Ali Zaradri at Awan-e-Sadr. Prime Minister Gilani appreciated his efforts for reconciliation between Pakistan People's Party and Pakistan Muslim League-N ensued after the disqualification of Sharif brothers and imposition of Governor Rule in Punjab. Prime Minister Gilani and Balochistan Chief Minister in the meeting discussed ways and means to take back PML-N leadership on board and ensure smooth sailing of the government both at the Federal and Punjab levels. Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani made it loud and clear that the government does not seek confrontation with its former coalition partner and wants to see the incumbent dispensation as strong political system which is possible only if it does work and continue till its stipulated constitutional term both at the Centre and in the provinces. Nawab Aslam Raesani asked the Prime Minister to prevail upon the party leadership and simultaneously call upon PML-N leadership to soften their stance so that a middle course could be carved out to break the deadlock and steer the country out of current crisis. Both of the leaders were of the view that the issues should be discussed and debated on the floor of the Parliament and crisis should be resolved through negotiation instead of taking to streets. Later, talking to media after holding meetings with President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani, Nawab Aslam Raesani said that he had held fruitful discussions with the both the leaders and hoped that the efforts being made to end the prevailing political impasse would succeed. He urged for the need of reconciliation with the Sharif brothers as democratic set-up would in danger if the issues were not solved swiftly. Chief Minister Balochistan also said all the political partiers are disappointed over the Supreme Court's verdict of Sharif brothers disqualification as it has plunged the country into political turmoil. Answering a question about Governor Rule in Punjab, he made it clear that Governor Rule in Punjab should be lifted forthwith and whosoever has the majority should be allowed to form government in the province.
