Pakistan government has identified the kidnappers of an American UN official being held captive and surrounded the area, a minister said, as a deadline to kill the hostage was extended. Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said security forces had surrounded the area where John Solecki, head of the UN refugee agency, was being held, but would exercise caution. "We have identified the kidnappers and the place where Solecki is being kept," Qureshi told reporters in central Multan city late Friday, without naming the group responsible. "The government will not do anything in haste that may endanger Solecki's life," he said, adding, "we are trying to ensure his safe recovery." The shadowy Baluchistan Liberation United Front (BLUF) said last month it was responsible for abducting Solecki in the southwestern province of Baluchistan last month. It has threatened to kill him unless more than 1,100 people on a list of "prisoners" it provided were freed, and set a Thursday deadline.
