Pure desperation

THE attack on the shrine of Rehman Baba a 17th century Sufi poet and saint by unknown miscreants on Thursday shows what is wrong with the philosophy of the extremists. The explosives planted in the mausoleum badly damaged the building yet no one was injured. Police suspect the involvement of Mangal Bagh the leader of the banned outfit Lashkar-e-Islam as according to people associated with the shrine militants had told women not to visit the shrine and had threatened to blow it up in case of non-compliance. Done out of sheer desperation, the attack and many more of the kind brings to light their retrogressive mindset. They tend to twist the religion out of its original context with the version that suits their ends. Subjugation of women in all its forms as manifested by burning of girls' schools in Swat, beheading westerners, ban on music, forbidding men to play sports are just some of the things that constitute their code of life. That the militant are slowly creeping into the fabric of our society came to the fore when TTP told women in settled areas of Punjab like Kot Addu not to venture outside their homes without a headgear. The trend needs to be checked.
