ISLAMABAD

The Asian Alpine Ski Championship concluded in Korea, where 35 countries sent their skiers in giant and slalom categories.

Korean team won gold and bronze whereas Iranian team clinched silver medal in giant slalom category, in the slalom category Iran won gold, whereas Koreans beg silver and bronze medals.

Pakistan team comprising of two girls and as many boys performed well, as Karim took lead from Indian opponent and captured 13th position, whereas Nawaz Junior got 16th.

Regrettably, none of Pakistani team member except Fatima Sohail could reach finish line in slalom category. Interestingly, most of the athletes either disqualified or could not excel in second round due to tough and bad maintenance of the ski sloop. Indian top skier M Arif was also disqualified along with his counterpart, however, remaining two Indian skiers made it to the finish line, but failed to get any position. All the players complained about the rough and hard condition of the slop, which, according to them, was not up to the international standard.

Ski Federation of Pakistan (SFP) spokesman Obaid-ur-Rehman Abbasi was of the view that the participation of girls in such a big event was encouraging. “Our athletes proved that they can not only compete but also perform well. Their performance in giant slalom was wonderful and up to the mark despite the fact others enjoyed the liberty of latest techniques and other facilities at their respective countries.” The team is returning home today (Saturday) and will be received by SFP officials.
