Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) is regarded as a pioneer in public health institute. Recently it has been given the status of a Medical University, it also has a full fledge children hospital, gifted by Japan, besides a Maternity Child Health Care Centre. People from far flung areas come here for medical facilities. Almost 90% emergency cases are brought here, despite the presence of other public sector hospitals in the twin cities. Now lack of medical facilities and absence of modern surgical instruments is pose a threat to patients. The surgical ward cannot handle the abundance of patients and many serious cases are dealt in an open area outside the wards.
I was shocked to think what would be happening in other government run hospitals? Our federal government spends billions on project’s like Metro Bus and on import of expensive cars for politicians, while our hospitals are left in such a state. Latest technology is as important as professional skills. To prove my claim doctors in PIMS hospital were not able to deal with head injury of late Dr. Shahid Nawaz, Head of Cardiology Department, and thus he was shifted to CMH Rawalpindi. Though Federal Ombudsman has taken notice of deteriorating health facilities in PIMS and has formed a committee to probe the issue, I would still like to request the PM and our Health Ministry to pay special attention to this prestigious institute.
