By-polls deferred for two months

ISLAMABAD - Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Monday further postponed the by-elections for two months, as it will be conducted now on August 18 rather than June 18. According to the ECP, the by-elections are postponed for another couple of months due to the report of Home Secretary NWFP about the adverse law and order situation in the province and also because of forthcoming budget sessions in the National and Provincial Assemblies. Again the overall security situation is another reason behind this deferment. New revised schedule for August 18 by-elections would be issued in due course of time, however, the candidates who have filed nomination papers with returning officers concerned would need not file papers afresh. Meanwhile, the ECP, through a press note, informed that in pursuant to the orders of the Supreme Court of April 30 on CP No 369 of 2008 (Aftab Shahban Mirani and others Vs Muhammad Ibrahim and others) and CP No 370 of 2008 (Agha Arslan Khan and others Vs Abid Hussain and Others), it has directed fresh polls at the polling stations of constituency NA-202, Shikarpur, and PS-12 Shikarpur-II on May 17. The polling stations of NA-202 are 88, 157-160, 164, 171-176, 179, 180, 183, 186, 187 and 189, whereas the polling stations of PS-12 are 38-41, 45, 52-57, 60, 61, 64, 67, 68 and 70. However, the returning officers concerned shall personally supervise the polling with adequate resources. APP adds: Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan Kanwar Muhammad Dilshad said the new schedule of by-elections can be revised, if the federal government and political parties desire so. He said the Election Commission (EC) is ready to reconsider the date of by-elections if provincial government reviews its reference. The report of provincial EC would be sought on latest situation there. EC values political parties and date can be revised on their advice. He said EC was contemplating to extend the date for by-elections for the last two to three days. Security environment in NWFP is not good. EC decided to extend the date after consultation. The practice is quite common for the last few years. Whenever any provincial government expressed dissatisfaction over law and order situation the election is postponed there, he said. Online adds: Aiwan-e-Sadr on Monday refuted all claims that by-elections have been postponed on the directives/interference of President Pervez Musharraf. Aiwan-e-Sadr sources said that Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was an autonomous body, which takes its decision on its own. They said that the ECP had taken the decision in view of the current situation of the country and the law and order situation in NWFP, hence President Musharraf has nothing to do with it.
