The Supreme Court decision against the graduation condition for election is a welcome and heartening one. The graduation condition for contesting election was against the fundamental human rights and against the constitution. It has deprived many shrewd and astute politicians from serving the country. This law was politically motivated and was blatantly discriminatory, which has immensely battered the nascent democracy in Pakistan. The previous assembly was graduate one but their performance was below par and they did not come up to the expectation of the nation. In a country where education is the least important sector and only one percent of the total budget is spent on it, it is foolish to make the graduation a prerequisite for contesting election. -ROHUL AMIN, Swat, via e-mail, April 22.
