ISLAMABAD - The ambitious plans of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) to win the crucial AJK Legislative Assembly’s election have hit the ground after recent rains and land sliding as well as Panama leaks .

A cursory analysis of the ground situation reveals that election for 49 LA seats has been delayed for one month till July due to incomplete computerised voter list because of heavy rains and land sliding. The elections which were previously scheduled for June will now be held in July.

The AJK Legislative Assembly elections are due to be held latest by July 24 this year in line with the Act of 1974, which is the interim constitution of Azad Jammu Kashmir as July 25 this year will be the last day of the existing AJK Legislative Assembly.

Chief Election Commissioner AJK Mustafa Mughal last month announced that election cannot be held in June because voters’ registration has not been completed due to heavy rainfall and land sliding.

He also said that due to the Islamic month of Ramazan in June it is certainly not possible to conduct elections in the very month. The whole procedure may take more than a month, he added.

This development has squarely affected the PML-N’s game plan by slowing down its highly charged election campaign as all other political players, big or small, have gained ample opportunity to try their luck on maximizing their position.

The PML-N has fielded its candidates on all 41 seats of the assembly for direct polls while five seats are reserved for women and three are meant for the technocrats, one each reserved for overseas Kashmiris, Ulema/Mashaikh and professionals.

All the major political players including PML-N, PPP, PTI, AJK Muslim Conference, Jammat-e-Islami, MQM, Jammu & Kashmir Liberation League and independents have time on their side to convince their voters to cause dint to one another.

Interestingly, now all the political parties as well as independents are working day and night to bulldoze the PML-N plans, especially after the release of the Panama leaks .

“Panama leaks have taken out the steam from aggressive election campaign of the PML-N candidates,” said a senior AJK PPP leader Ch Muhammad Ashraf, adding recent address to a PPP public meeting by party chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari caused serious dent to PML-N’s election campaign.

He said that PPP is contesting the polls on the basis of its performance during its last stint in power. This view was also endorsed by PPP senior leader Chaudhry Yasin, as according to him the PPP is fully geared up to win the polls.

On the other hand, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of Imran Khan is also struggling to adjust its plans according to the evolving situation and has made the corruption of PML-N leadership as its election slogan. The PTI leaders involved in the AJK election claimed that election plans of the PML-N have dashed to the ground because of the Panama leaks squarely hitting the family of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The PTI which just has one seat in the outgoing assembly is working on its plans aiming at to win maximum seats with big margin in order to form next government.

According to PTI leader Chaudhry Hameed, different political parties are trying to form electoral alliances to field joint candidates in the elections to 49 seats of the Legislative Assembly. However he said the PTI and other parties are fully prepared this time to lay the tradition to rest by thwarting some pre-poll rigging practices of the past.

Other smaller parties including the Muslim Conference and independents are making seat adjustments either with the PPP or PTI but definitely not with the PML-N.
