Godown in Landhi export zone gutted

KARACHI - A massive fire was erupted in a godown located in Landhi Export Processing Zone. One firefigher received burn injuries while the goods were blazed in the incident. According to the area police, the fire broke out in the clothes warehouse that was continued for several hours. The firefighters as well as volunteers from different welfare associations and the City government along with contingent of law enforcers also reached the scene and immediately cordoned off the whole area. After the struggle of several hours, they extinguished the fire but the factory was completely gutted. The factory was covered an area of 8000 square yards. The factory was used to recycle used clothes and then bring them into the markets. It was previously used as chemical godown. Talking to the mediamen, Chief Fire Officer Ahsan Ahmed Siddiqui said that following the fire, all fire tenders from the metropolitan including two snorkels; four huge water tankers were immediately called to the site to extinguish the deadly blaze while all the employees of the factory were also evacuated. Fortunately none of them was injured except only one firefighter Mehmoodul Haq who received injuries when a wall of the gutted factory collapsed on him and was immediately shifted to the nearest hospital and later shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). The official has termed the fire as being third-degree and said that it was going out of control due to limited resources. Siddiqui said that the incident occurred due to the negligence of the factory administration, as no precautionary measures have been taken for the safety of employees. The fire completely gutted the godown and the first floor of the building had also collapsed. He further said that when the rescue team reached the spot they faced some difficulties as they did not find any place to enter the factory but after the efforts, they had succeeded to go inside the factory. Mentioning the cause of the fire, he said, obviously, it seemed a fault or negligence of the factory staffers, which resulted in this huge fire. The lethal fire also damaged the factories located near this factory. Fire quickly engulfed the whole factory due to the polyester and nylon clothes and also toys. The owner and the administration of the factory have escaped therefore we could not say anything more about the reason behind it, he said. Other factories located near the godown also were evacuated and the power and gas supply of the Landhi Export processing zone was temporarily suspended.
