Former greats can help in regaining lost glory

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan hockey team return after not more than average tour of Australia as far as their performance is concerned as green shirts performance was not as satisfactory as par liking of the team and the masses as hockey is the national game of Pakistan. The only notable thing in this tour is that they have managed to win the three-nation hockey event after beating hosts Australia in a close final. Pakistan was beaten 4-1 in the first match while Australia handed 8-2 humiliation in the second league match. Pakistan played two matches against arch-rivals India and both the match were drawn and Pakistan went to Pakistan through their better goal average. Pakistan defeated Australia 4-3 in the final. Earlier, Pakistan team finished third in the four-nation tournament played among hosts Australia, Pakistan, India and New Zealand. These performances are not good enough especially when the Dutch coach is being paid such a hefty amount every month, how can the manager Kh Junaid describe this performance as par expectations. Pakistan must keep a close eye on the next assignment, Champions Trophy to be held in New Zealand in December and the most important task of London Olympics next year. Hockey is the only real hope of Pakistan of finishing on podium and bringing a medal. The inclusion of Sohail Abbas has done wonders for the green shirts that improved penalty corners conversion rate, Imran also performed well behind the bar but Pakistan still needs the experience of Salman Akbar if they want to win the forthcoming two major events. Pakistan Hockey Federation step to include Rehan Butt name for the next assignment which is a good omen for hockey boost and this step was praised by the hockey legends. Shakeel has done a fine job as stand in captain in the absence of Imran, with Rehan and Shakeel spearheading the attack to get desired results. Coach and manager should now start work to remove weaknesses and try to improve their skills. The tour of Australia will certainly help the green shirts in the Champions Trophy as New Zealand and Australian conditions are almost similar. Pakistan hockey can be put back on the right track if federation set aside their differences with former hockey legends which will help Pakistan hockey a lot as Pakistan hockey travelling to its lower ebb instead of improvement. The federation must try to improve team's world rankings and consistent performances from the players as Pakistan are a poor nation and stop lavish spending on foreign coach.
