FAISALABAD - The government is making all-out efforts to mitigate people’s sufferings with a special focus on new businesses, employment opportunity and agriculture development.

Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah stated while addressing delegates of International Cotton Advisory Committee at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad on Sunday. He said that the country is producing major crops in abundance, ensuring food security in the country. He said that the government is taking revolutionary steps including launching Kissan package, increasing agricultural loans, setting up cattle market and agriculture policy reforms. The Punjab government has tasked UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Iqrar Ahmad with revamping agricultural policy,” he informed.

Rana Sanullah claimed that Pakistan is the 4th yarn exporting country and one of the largest producers of milk and citrus. He said in the recent year, the country has produced 14 million tonnes of cotton. He said that last year, the cotton has faced decline in the production but with the support and initiatives of the government, the crisis has been overcome,” he said. The provincial minister said that the government has added Rs100 billion loan for small farmers that will help them increase productivity. He said that the Kissan package is also a revolutionary step.

Earlier, textile secretary Hassan Iqbal said that International Cotton Advisory Committee meeting had been held this week in Islamabad in which delegates from 25 countries took part. He said that the country is blessed with tremendous talents and resources that need to be tapped to meet the demand for increasing population.

UAF VC Dr Iqrar said that climate changes are playing havoc with the lives of the people. He said that climate resilient varieties must be promoted to fight the challenges. He said low investment in agricultural research is a hindrance to alleviate hunger and poverty from the county. The VC said that there is a need for a shift in policy to put a focus on water efficient crops.

He said that vibrant market and value addition mechanism in agriculture sector are the need of the hour.
