ISLAMABAD - Just after a week of appointment, Col (retd) Hassan Immad Mohammadi has been removed from the post of Managing Director of Pakistan Television Corporation with the approval of Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry over displaying slug “Begging” instead of Beijing during Prime Minister Imran Khan live address during his visit to China two-days back.

The PTV Management has also issued show cause notices to Director News Shazia Sikandar, Director Current Affairs Riffat Nazir and Director Information Technology Muhammad Kashif and directed them to appear before an inquiry committee and clear their positions in this regard. The management has also suspended the three employees who were present on production panel during the Khan’s speech.

According to the notification issued by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting: “In supersession of this Ministry’s office Order of even number dated 22-10-2018, the look after charge of Col. (Retd) Hassan Immad Muhammadi, Director PTVC as Managing Director PTVC is withdrawn with immediate effect till further orders. This issues with the approval of Minister for Information and Broadcasting.”

People criticised the federal government and the state-owned TV management over displaying the slug of ‘Begging’ during the speech of PM at a function in China. The PTV admitted its mistake and wrote on its twitter: “Today during the live address of prime minister in China, a typographical error took place, which remained on screen for 20 seconds and was later removed. Strict action has been initiated under rules against officials concerned.”

Sources told The Nation that PTV Management had given the look after charge of Corporation to Col. Hassan on the direction of Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry but the Chairman PTVC Arshad Khan was not happy on this development. They said that PM Imran Khan has appointed Arshad Khan on merit after analysing his performance during his last tenure as MD PTVC with the task to make the PTVC as a profitable corporation.

They mentioned that PTVC Management wants to remove all three directors including DN, Director Current Affairs and Director IT from current positions after completion of the inquiry.  Till the completion of inquiry all three directors have not been allowed to take any decision regarding their departments, they added.

Last week, the PTVC Management stopped the entry of retired employees in the premises of corporation headquarters. As a result, they staged protest in front of PTV and later PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto joined the protest and assured them that he would raise the voice for their rights on the floor of the house. Information Minister also took notice of the ban on entrance of PTV and directed the Management to sort out this issue.

On Monday, Chairman Committee on Human Rights Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar has also taken notice of delay in paying of pensions to the retired employees and directed the PTVC Management to brief the committee on the latest situation in this regard in next committee meeting.
