Silent victims

Before Ramadan, governments in the past usually announced Ramadan packages for citizens offering big discounts on food items and many other things. But no such action was taken by the new government this time. No Ramadan bazaars were installed this time nor any price control lists displayed and enforced in the Sunday Bazaars or other markets. The trader of every ilk sold his wares on the price he wished to charge. Milk, yogurt, fruit, essential commodities of every household menu during Ramadan, were being sold at such high prices that middle or lower middle class just couldn't think of buying them. Even the items of daily kitchen use, cooking oil, flour and sugar were being sold at higher prices in the holy month. There is no one to look after the problems of people because parties in the coalition government are busy in their games of power play; they have simply forgotten the promises they made during the elections. People continue to remain silent spectators of this drama, convinced that nothing is ever going to change here. -SUMBUL HAIDER, Karachi, via e-mail, September 17.
