LAHORE - Celebrations erupted in the City following announcement about Asif Zardari's victory in presidential election. Jubilant PPP workers gathered at The Mall in front of the Punjab Assembly to express happiness over election of their party chief as country's 12th president. PPP workers danced to the tune of drum and marched on The Mall and adjoining roads for quite some time along with local party leaders. PPP's Lahore President Haji Azizur Rehman Chan, Secretary Information Zekria Butt, Muneer Ahmad Khan and other local leaders were prominent on the occasion. Sweets were also distributed, besides an impressive show of fireworks. At different intervals of time from 4 pm to 7 pm, party workers coming from different parts of the City converged at Chairing Cross (The Mall) in the form of small groups to join the main rally. They were carrying banners inscribed with pro-Zardari slogans. The atmosphere echoed with the slogans of Jiay Bhutto. The PPP also organised a rally at Data Darbar, where party workers and leaders also offered thank-giving prayers. An impressive dance by trained horses, Bhangra (traditional dance performance) by party workers and distribution of sweets and milk were the hallmark of the event. While addressing the rally, PPP's Punjab general secretary Ghulam Abbas criticised PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif for what he called betraying the people at a time when ARD movement against General Musharraf was at its peak. The Sharif brothers, he said, preferred exile to imprisonment and left the country after striking a deal with a dictator in utter disregard of people's sentiments. They left the country, when people needed them the most, he added. The PPP leader also criticised PML-N central leader Ahsan Iqbal for his anti-PPP statements, and called him an agent of spy agencies. He said Ahsan Iqbal was conspiring against democracy because he was product of dictatorship. Ali Badr said that Asif Ali Zardari's election as President was the victory of masses and party workers. He said people of Pakistan in all the four provinces had expressed their full faith and confidence in the leadership of Mr Zardari, who would steer the country out of the current crises. A function was also held at Governor House to celebrate Mr Zardari's victory. Jiyalas danced to the tune of drum and chanted slogans of Jiye Bhutto. A show of fireworks was arranged on the occasion. It was a followed by an address by Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, who said that PML-N Government was at the mercy of PPP, and would fall within 24 hours if PPP withdrew its support any time.
