Parties want president to be apolitical

ISLAMABAD - The leaders of PML-N and PML-Q have felicitated the PPP Co-Chairman, Asif Ali Zardari on his election as the President of Pakistan. Talking to journalists here on Saturday, the PML-N Presidential Candidate Saeeduzzaman Siddiqui said that election was held in a very peaceful manner. "PML-N accepts the results and now need of the hour is to address the challenges being faced by the country," he added. PML-Q's Presidential Candidate Mushahid Hussain Syed felicitated the PPP CO-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari on winning the presidential election and also thanked the leadership and supporters of PML-Q for showing their unflinching support for him. Meanwhile, PML-Q President Ch. Shujaat Hussain and Opposition Leader in the Lower House Ch. Pervez Elahi also congratulated Asif Ali Zardari on winning the Presidential election. They expressed their hope that he would be a President of entire Pakistan and not only of Sindh. PML-N central leader Javed Hashmi said after a long break a civilian is entering into the President House, who had languished in jail for more than eleven years. "Despite differences, PML-N is happy over the success of a civilian as the President," he added. While pinning his hope on Asif Ali Zardari, Hashmi said during his tuner as President, Zardari would play an important role for the supremacy of Parliament, independence of judiciary and strengthening institutions. He termed September 6 as the day for the victory of democracy. Agencies add: PML-N accepted defeat in Saturday's presidential election, saying it hoped winner Asif Zardari would be 'apolitical' as head of state. "We accept the results and we hope Zardari will resign from his party position immediately," Khwaja Saad Rafiq, leader of Sharif's PML-N party, told reporters after the election. PML-N Information Secretary Ahsan Iqbal added: "We hope Zardari will remain apolitical as president."
